Hair Shedding vs. Hair Breakage: How to Tell the Difference

Hair shedding and hair breakage are different problems. Shedding means a whole hair has released from the follicle as part of the hair cycle. Breakage means the hair shaft has snapped somewhere along its length. You can have one, the other, or both at the same time.

Hair shedding vs breakage

Feature Shedding Breakage
What happens A full hair releases from the root The shaft snaps along its length
What you may see Full-length strands, often similar to your overall hair length Shorter pieces, uneven lengths, frayed or rough ends
Common influences Hair cycle, illness, stress, rapid weight loss, hormonal change and some medications Bleach, heat, tight styling, friction, rough detangling and damaged fiber
What shampoo can do Clean the scalp, not stop a medical shedding trigger Improve slip and manageability, but not reverse already-snapped fibers

How to inspect what you are seeing

Do not rely on one shower or one brush. Compare patterns over several washes and look at strand length, the condition of your ends and whether you are also seeing progressive scalp visibility.

The American Academy of Dermatology explains that excessive shedding and hair loss are different and lists common triggers for increased shedding. See the AAD guidance on hair shedding.

If the problem looks like breakage

  • Reduce unnecessary heat and bleach.
  • Detangle gently from the ends upward.
  • Avoid repeatedly tight or heavy hairstyles.
  • Use conditioner where the lengths need slip.
  • Handle wet hair gently rather than rubbing it aggressively.

If the problem looks like increased shedding

Consider recent illness, major stress, rapid weight change, childbirth, hormonal changes or medication changes. Persistent, sudden or severe shedding deserves professional evaluation, especially when accompanied by other symptoms.

Commercial bridge: treat the right problem

For a full framework on shedding, breakage and density changes, read the Thinning-Looking & Fragile Hair Guide.

Vassia Labs Scalp Support Shampoo is a cosmetic cleanser for fine, flat and thinning-looking hair. It can help with cleansing, residue, manageability and visible fullness of existing hair; it is not a treatment for the medical cause of increased shedding.

Frequently asked questions

Does a white bulb mean a hair was shed rather than broken?

A club-shaped end can be consistent with a naturally shed telogen hair, but examining one strand cannot diagnose why shedding is occurring.

Can both shedding and breakage happen together?

Yes. Someone can experience a shedding trigger while also having damaged, breakage-prone lengths.
